I am not a professional photography but I have a D40 and I bought the 18-55mm and then I decided to but the 55-200mm and I'm glad that I did! It's not super intense and complicated, which is great for me, but the picture quality is amazing! I will say however the portability is a bit obnoxious.The lens is rather large and I can barely fit it and my other lense as well as my camera body and lens hood into my camera bag.However, besides be large enough, the lens is large and highly recommend it..
